The difference between telephoto and wide-angle lenses

Most cameras developed today come equipped with a zoom feature or, if they are high quality, can even replace their lenses entirely. By doing one of these things, a photographer has the ability to change the focal length of his or her lenses. This way, the photographer can change the size of an image in his photograph without having to change where he or she is standing. A lens that has a focal length about equal to the diagonal of the film frame is considered normal. A larger focal length creates a larger image, and a smaller focal length creates a smaller image. These larger and smaller focal length lenses are known as telephoto and wide-angle, respectively.
Telephoto lenses are often used by photographers when he or she is unable to move any closer to the object being photographed. A telephoto lens has a longer than normal focal length. This means that, although the photograph will have a smaller than normal angle of view, that small portion of the scene will appear much bigger than it normally would.
Most telephoto lenses appear to look like a much longer version of a standard camera lens. This is because telephoto lenses are comprised of two elements. The element in the front of the lens is a lens just like could be found on any normal camera. The second element is found in the back of the telephoto lens, closer to the photographer, and is used to magnify the front lens. This increases the focal length of the camera by making it appear that the first lens is much further away than it actually is. Because of this effect, much more detail can be seen on distant objects than could be seen using a lens with a smaller focal length.
Using a telephoto lens is not the only way to achieve a larger focal length, but it is usually recommended. A regular lens that has the same focal length as a telephoto lens can be extremely long, which would make the camera itself much harder to handle and balance properly. These long lenses have also been known to damage the lens mount of cameras, because of their abnormally long length. A telephoto lens allows a photographer to have a long focal length without the extreme long lens that would be necessary by using a normal lens.
For photographers who want to capture a large landscape yet who only want to carry a small amount of equipment to do the job, the wide-angle lens is ideal. A wide-angle lens is designed with a wider than normal angle of view which allows for the subject to be captured in the entire frame with no problems. A camera with a wide angle of view means that the size and distance of the subject will be exaggerated with near and far objects. The wide-angle lens camera also contains a short focal length (the distance between the middle of the lens and its focal point). Combining the short focal length and the wide angle of view, the wide-angle lens produces an image that will be smaller yet clear and the boundaries around the area will be slightly distorted. The wide-angle lens is designed with a longer lens, allowing for more magnification and no blurring on the subject directly.
The construction of a wide-angle lens consists of two different forms; short focus lens and retro focus lens. A short focus lens is made up of multiple glass elements which are shaped nearly symmetrical in front and behind the diaphragm. The short focus lens is widely used with the usage on large format view cameras. However, the down side to short focus lens is that when the focal length decreases the distance of the rear element also decreases. This also makes the short focus lens difficult to use with single lens reflex camera. The retro focus lens solves the problem that comes with using the short focus lens. In the retro focus lens it has a symmetrical design allowing the rear element to be further away from the film plane. The retro focus lens wide angle lenses are more commonly wanted for the single lens reflex camera.
Although the wide-angle lens seems as if it would only useful for capturing an image when one cannot step back any further, this is a misconception. A wide-angle lens can also be used for becoming closer to an object. By using a wide-angle lens up close to an object, the image will have a wide angle of view, just like the first way to use a wide-angle lens, and also has a close minimum focusing distance. These two effects make the wide-angle lens a unique form of camera lenses. One last effect of using a wide-angle lens up close is that it can produce extreme exaggeration of detail and size. For example, even with the immense detail and size of the image, some parts of the body can appear to be disproportioned and make a person seem oddly shaped, which is not how most people do not want to be depicted.
Telephoto and wide-angle lenses are both tremendous camera lenses to use in photography. Even though both of these lenses are said to be opposite, they tend to compliment each others weaknesses. The telephoto lens creates an image that is larger than normal and the wide-angle lens creates an image that is smaller. The telephoto lens tends to compress the space and the wide-angle expands the space. What is considered to be the best part of using both of these lenses is that there is a variety of usage in each one, yet there is just a small amount of equipment to haul around.
